A 10-Point Plan for Options (Without Being Overwhelmed)

Why a Fiction Author Should Increase their Vocabulary

On a regular basis, fiction authors use certain vocabularies when writing. There are other vocabulary one can learn so that you always have words that you can choose from when writing. When you are a fiction writer it is best if you use verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives that best bring out the writing. What makes up good writing is how well you put the words together and how the words themselves are. It is easy to get into a novel that is engaging when you read it. The novel should be reread after you enjoyed reading it the first time. The goal is to examine how the work was written. How the plot and characters were developed as well as the technical aspects such as grammar are some of the things you should be mindful of. American and British authors write differently, this you should know.

It could be their punctuation, spelling and the difference in the words that are being used. For example, among is used by the Americans and amongst by the British. It is important that you stick to the standard rules when writing for American readers or for British readers.

Fiction authors can and should expand the base of the vocabulary that they use. Anytime when they are reading another author’s work, they can do this. Noting down any new vocabulary that you come across is very important. Most authors do not do this even though it is general knowledge. It is one of the many ways of building your vocabulary even though it is a logical thing to do. Consider getting a notebook or use any other means you desire to make categories that suits your needs. Anytime people are talking or when there is a dialogue on the TV or when you are reading, you should concentrate and listen keenly. Take note of the verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives or any compound nouns that are being used. Chances are you will be surprised of the words you already use, the ones you didn’t know about and those you never thought of using. The words or phrases that your characters might occasionally use should be kept. For example for the eyes, use a phrase like ‘her eyes surveyed the room’.

When you take note of such words or phrases, you are able to be creative enough to vividly describe what is going on internally and externally concerning your characters. Such a list will help you rephrase your words and write authentic and creative vocabulary. Use this list when making your draft.
